Sony vegas question about adding text?

beginner, right? whenever I add text, supposedly on transparent background to overlay the existing video, it blacks out the existing video and shows only the text. ?? The only way I can see around this is to make an entirely separate track for the text, which is not what the tutorials say. ?? Thanks.
