Transparent overlay after effects how to?

I am making a movie for school and it contains one scene where someone wakes up from the first person perspective and in this scene I wanted to have an I closing and opening overlay. I have already made an animated gif image. but when I try to add it to after effects it just displays the whole image and not just the eyelid but also the white background which should be transparent. Anyone know the answer ?
